Uluwatu Temple Bali Sunset Tour – The day of a magical sunset

Today was a day for proper relaxation; we had a Balinese massage earlier in the day followed by just chilling in the pool villa. For the evening we had booked Uluwatu temple Bali sunset tour. Bali is land known for its stunning temples and Uluwatu along with Tanah Lot are probably the most popular ones among Indians.

Uluwatu temple Bali sunset tour – Where to book?

Just like the White water rafting, Ubud Bali and Bali Safari and countless tours before that, the go to option would be Klook, however for Uluwatu you would generally have 2 options:

  1. Manage your own transport, and buy tickets for Uluwatu Temple & Kecak dance online.
    • The main advantage of booking tickets through Klook is that you don’t need to stand in the queue which can get really long if you don’t reach on time.
    • Book tickets here – Uluwatu entrance & kecak dance tickets
  2. All inclusive tour which includes:
    • Transfer to & fro from the hotel.
    • Entrance tickets to Padang-padang Beach (IDR10,000), Uluwatu Temple (IDR50,000) and Kecak Dance Performance (IDR100,000)
    • Book tickets here – All Inclusive, Uluwatu sunset tour

We took our own scooter upto the temple and reached the temple by 3:30 PM. We had to pay a small parking fee and we started our tour of the temple.

Uluwatu temple Bali Sunset tour – Walking tour

One important thing to note is that the temple complex is perched on the cliff and actually pretty big. It takes good 30-40 mins to walk from one end to the other, so arrive by 3:30-4:00 PM so that you can explore the temple with ample time in hand.

Uluwatu temple Bali Sunset tour – Kecak dance

For most Indians, the story depicted through the Kecak dance would be very familiar as its based on Ramayana and depicts the episodes of Sita abduction and Hanuman’s burning of Lanka. So you won’t need a guide to tell you about the characters and the story.

One thing to note though, in the Kecak dance performance both Rama & Lakshamana were played by women. So that might be the only point of confusion.

Background about the Kecak Dance

Kecak – pronounced Kechak, known in Indonesian as tari kecak, is a form of Balinese hindu dance and music drama that was developed in the 1930s. Since its creation it has been performed primarily by men, with the very first women’s kecak group starting in 2006. The dance is based on the story of the Ramayana and is traditionally performed in temples and villages across Bali.

Also known as the Ramayana monkey chant, the dance is performed by a circle of as many as 150 performers wearing checked cloths around their waists, percussively chanting chak and moving their hands and arms. The performance depicts a battle from the Ramayana, in which the monkey-like Vanaras, led by Hanuman, help Prince Rama fight the evil King Ravana.

It was a splendid performance of dance, acting, acrobatics and some fireworks as well. The character playing Hanumana even interacts with the crowd making the experience more involving and fun.

The majestic sunset

If the performance wasn’t enough, the gods blessed us with the most beautiful sunset so far of our Bali trip. The colours and the location of the amphitheatre for the show make it a grand sight.

Earlier in the day – Visit to Jeremy Spa

We had booked ourselves for a hour long session of Balinese massage. The spa, we had booked in Bali Jeremy Spa is no longer available for booking via Klook. So here’s another equally good option if not better.

Balinese Spa – Experience

Our experience was excellent, while booking we just have to select a date and slot and you will be picked up accordingly from your hotel.

We reached around 15 mins prior to our slot and on our arrival we were served herbal tea and snacks. Thereafter, we were both given a netted disposable underwear and asked to change out of our clothes. The room was beautiful decorated and my wife was handed over a flower bouquet as well.

We just had no idea how the next 2-2.5 hours vanished and all I remember is by the end of the massage my body had turned into jello.

After the massage, we headed back to the resort, took a power nap and then went to Uluwatu.
